Velocirapture

Beast Within
Self-released

On songs like "Melpop," with its hint of guitar atmosphere in the background, textural, minimalistic percussion and echoing bass line, Velocirapture imagines the kind of moody yet strangely compelling bedroom recordings Robert Smith might have made had he grown up a couple of decades later. On "The Watcher," a clacking sound evokes a woman walking down empty streets at night, like a character in Suspiria before the demons strike her down. The rest of the music offers burbling bass under vocals that conjure radio transmissions coming from inside a car — sibilant warnings of terrible weather to come. "Sailor Song," meanwhile, is something right out of Julie Ruin, if that project were darker and more menacing.
