Sock It To 'Em

If you've been known to wear sandals with socks in the winter, this one's for you. After a decade of hosting the Teva Mountain Games in the summer, the Vail Valley Foundation is bringing the same festival atmosphere and spirit of competition to its new Winter Teva Mountain Games today through Sunday, with $60,000 in prizes on the line for mountain biking, climbing, skiing, mountaineering, snow-shoeing, and even action-sports photography events.

"This isn't the X Games; the winter Teva Mountain Games are a celebration of non-motorized, human-powered sports that are accessible to anybody," says Vail Valley Foundation spokeswoman Shelley Woodworth. "If you've ever been up to Vail for the summer Teva Mountain Games, you know how magic it can be, with a great festival feel, fun events for everybody from amateurs to pros, free concerts and more. We're hoping to bring some of that same magic into our new winter event."

Must-attend activities include the Outdoor Reels Film Series on Friday at 7 p.m. in Vail Village and the Telemark Big Air finals on Saturday at 6:30 p.m., followed by the Teva Best Trick mountain-bike competition. All events are free for spectators; registration fees for competitors vary depending on the event. Visit www.tevamountaingames.com for registration and more information.
