Yurt So Good

Anyone can do the trite candlelit dinner at one of the city's most romantic venues for Valentine's Day -- but this is Colorado, and maybe your special someone would feel more comfortable strapping on a pair of skis and enjoying a celebration off the beaten path. If that's the case, then consider the Magical Moonlight Dinners at the Yurt in Crested Butte, a gourmet dinner prepared by chef Tim Egelhoff.

"It's about a mile ski-in from the trailhead, and we have tiki torches lit along the way," explains Keith Bauer, executive director of the Crested Butte Nordic Council, which organizes the event. "It takes maybe 45 minutes at the very most to ski into the yurt. And when you reach the yurt, you're greeted by the staff and come in from the cold to a roaring wood fire."

The Nordic Council hosts dinners at the yurt throughout the wintertime, each with a different theme; for Valentine's Day the theme is, appropriately, "Evening in Paradise."

"I think most people are thrilled with the uniqueness of the experience," Bauer adds. "It's not a tremendously long journey, but it's long enough that people can slow down and watch the stars appearing or the moon rising."

Plus, the live music, warming fire and delectable dinner will surely help up the romance factor. Vegetarian and vegan options are available for the multi-course meal. The doors to the yurt open at 6 p.m., and dinner begins at 6:30; there will be another opportunity to experience this meal on Sunday, February 19. Admission is $65 and includes a trail pass and equipment rental; bring extra cash for beer and wine. Visit www.cbnordic.org for information or to make reservations.
