Achille Lauro

Flight or Fight
Hot Congress

It's tough to pin down a dominant sound or overarching musical theme on Flight or Fight, the new full-length release from Achille Lauro. The feel of the album's nine tracks ranges from breezy to meditative, and the sound veers from the danceable pop of "Lightning" to the amorphous experimentation of "Goddess an Island." That ambulant feel is no accident. Stitched together partly from past single releases, the album is a mix of old and new, a combination of tried-and-true material and rawer, less-refined output. The approach serves as a double-edged sword: The record's highlights shine bright, but rougher selections like "Goddess" can feel underdeveloped and rushed. Nonetheless, the album boasts plenty of great moments. Grounded in the powerful rhythm section of Ben Mossman and Jon Evans and buoyed by the earnest vocals of Matt Close and the bright guitar work of Luke Mossman, the record seeks to push the envelope and map out new musical territory. For the most part, it succeeds.
