Dance performances usually have a beginning and an end, but the Fresh Blood Collective is planning something a little different.
"Generally, audiences come at the beginning and leave at the end, and they're essentially captive for the entire duration of one performance," explains dance artist Ying Zhu. But she and six other dancers will disrupt that structure with their new collaborative piece, Adventures in Rupturing Seams.
With seven dances beginning every twenty minutes, the night will run more like an art gallery viewing, meaning that audiences can wander around and choose to stay for the entire duration of a performance -- or not. The dancers were asked to create unique pieces inspired by works in the 22-room Dikeou Collection, a gallery that features giant pink blow-up bunnies and other eccentric pieces of art. "One thing that I'm really interested in as a dancer and also a dance scholar is to sort of scramble the borders that separate categories of art," explains Zhu. "I was interested in how visual art can influence the medium of dance making and vice versa."
