Sinking Pink

I count myself among the lucky moms whose daughters haven't been sucked into the princess syndrome that plagues so many young girls growing up in this day and age. Mine had her Disney movies and her Barbie dolls, but she thankfully put them away on her own when it was time; now she dresses for, and thinks in, the real world of a modern middle-schooler, without caring a whit for living the Kardashian lifestyle. I like to think I had something to do with her fine sense of reality, but some girls don't have a chance, at least not according to author Peggy Orenstein, whose new and aptly named book, Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches From the Front Lines of the New Girlie-Girl Culture, posits on the dark side of princess culture, which comes dressed in a pink tutu and a plastic tiara.

More About

It's a subject in which Orenstein, a mother herself who's also written such books as Schoolgirls: Young Women, Self-Esteem, and the Confidence Gap, is well versed, and she'll be in town tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Tattered Cover, 2526 East Colfax Avenue, to discuss and sign Cinderella. Better leave the Little Mermaid gear at home. Admission is free; call 303-322-7727 or visit www.tatteredcover.com.
