The Swayback

Double Four Time
LGL Records

Most bands offer few surprises more than ten years into their career. While people who never liked the Swayback probably won't be persuaded by this latest offering, the guys really challenged themselves in making an album like this, one that's diverse yet cohesive. It isn't all over the place in a desperate attempt to be all things to all people, but somehow the record manages to bring together the varied strengths and musical interests of everyone involved. "Gonna Walk" recalls Roxy Music if that band had put in a lot more boogie in its rhythm. On "St. Francis," meanwhile, Eric Halborg's singing is mournfully resonant, resulting in music that wouldn't sound out of place on a David Lynch soundtrack. Through and through, Double Four Time proves that maturity and creative adventurousness are not mutually exclusive concepts.
