Live, From The Internet!

It's always a happening when Super Ordinary Gallery throws a show, but in the case of New Gothic, an exhibit of collages by Mario Zoots featuring work most commonly seen in cyberspace, it's maybe just a little bit more so. Though the DIY renaissance man is also known for video works and performs with the band Modern Witch, this particular artistic path of his lives primarily online for a reason. "I painted for a few years, but I never could afford a studio. I ran out of room. So I collaged because it was small, and I could fit 200 pieces in one box. I noticed a trend in 2008, through the website Flickr -- people were making collage and had online portfolios full of remixed images. I wanted to be a part of it."

Like many artists, particularly collagists, of his generation, Zoots first relied on found and "stolen" materials. But more recently, and in New Gothic, he's using more self-generated materials -- photographs and other artwork -- in an effort to create something unlike anyone else's work. "I started seeing other collage artists who were using the same magazines I was," he says, "and I started to feel unoriginal."
