Ode to the Bicycle

Mary Horrocks, curator of visual art and education at the Dairy Center for the Arts in Boulder, is fascinated by the way her fellow Coloradans merge sport, pastime, recreation, transportation and art in their daily lives. This month, she's made the Dairy into a temple to the most beloved symbol of that lifestyle.

More About

"When you walk into our facility, you'll just see bicycles everywhere," she says. "Here in Boulder and throughout the state of Colorado, we have this 'go big or go home' attitude about cycling, and we're bringing that spirit into the Dairy for a celebration of the bicycle in all kinds of art forms."

When Horrocks says "all kinds of art forms," she means it: Bike Art at the Dairy opens today with the premiere of a new bicycle-themed performance film by Boulder Ballet artistic director Peter Davison. That will complement paintings, photography, sculpture and bike-part art, as well as screenings of the documentaries Freedom Riders and Bicycle Dreams in the Dairy's Boedecker Theater.

Bike Art opens today from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Dairy, 2590 Walnut Street. For the full schedule of the month's events, visit www.thedairy.org.
