Beginning of the End

Many Doomsday theorists have circled December 21, 2012, on their calendars with a red pen, marking the date when humanity comes to a violent end. Yet indigenous people around the world see 2012 as an era of transformation and heightened awareness. A change is gonna come, they say, but the world and its people will be better for it.

Transformation and choice are themes of B'aktun 13, which follows three Latinos who struggle to find their way back to the United States after being deported to Mexico following an ICE raid. Their journey through the land and prophecies of Ancient Maya is both physical and mythological, as the three encounter indigenous wisdom and warnings, deities and visions that force them to confront their worldview. "Thirteen may be the end of the Mayan calendar, but it is also a time for us as individuals to reflect on our lives and think about how we can make the world a better place for the future," says Danel Malan, artistic director of Portland's Teatro Milagro.

Teatro Milagro presents B'aktun 13 tonight as part of the Fertile Ground festival of new works at Su Teatro, 721 Santa Fe Drive; showtime is 7:30 p.m. Call 303-296-0219 or visit www.suteatro.net for details.
Sat., March 31, 7:30 p.m., 2012
