In The Book of Drugs, the memoir from which the author and musician will read tonight at the Fox Theatre, Doughty unearths his dangerous and depressing past and lets his audience dig deeper. He will read from the collection of anecdotes, play songs from his latest solo album, Yes and Also Yes, and then give the audience free rein to ask questions about his dark musical past.
"I came into it wanting to tell an addiction story without any bad-assery to it," Doughty says, noting that when it comes time for the Q&A portion of his show, the audience usually wants the dirt on the decimation of his mid-'90s radio-friendly band Soul Coughing. The author promises to indulge the gossip; just don't ask him to sing any songs from his Soul Coughing days.
The Mike Doughty concert, reading and Q&A begins tonight at 9 p.m. at the Fox Theatre, 1135 13th Street, in Boulder; doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets for the all-ages event are $22 to $24, and can be purchased at 303-443-3399 or www.foxtheatre.com.
