Sound the Horns

If there's any jazz trumpeter out there who fully embraces Dizzy Gillespie's legacy, it's Jon Faddis. Gillespie was mentor and friend to Faddis, who closely emulated his idol through his sheer command of the trumpet and his ability to soar in the upper register. In 1987, Faddis played a primary role in organizing and rehearsing Gillespie's big band, and he was music director for Gillespie's United Nations Orchestra.

Faddis has paid tribute to Gillespie in just about all of his work, including his time as leader of the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars. And as part of tonight's The Majesty of the Trumpet -- Louis, Miles, Dizzy...and Faddis, at the University of Colorado at Boulder, he'll be playing a set of Gillespie favorites that he arranged, backed by CU's award-winning Jazz Ensemble I.
