Nearer, My God, to Thee

Last time out, the Denver Public Library's Frock Out fashion fete went a little wacky, with a side-show theme that rocked the Denver Central Library's Schlessman Hall with drag queens, freaks and roller derby girls. But this year, which also happens to mark the hundredth anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, is going to be all about Belle Epoque opulence gone horribly wrong. As the romantic shipwreck unravels, twelve competing designers will present looks for each season, accompanied by a four-piece orchestra in life vests and a stunning backdrop of dramatic projections by Locker Partners. Frock Out 2012: Come Undone co-organizer Brandi Shigley, who coordinated the designer end of the show, says part of the thrill will be in the sheer variety of ideas audience members will see strut down the runway: "It's interesting having such a diverse group of people; even in the style of the dresses and their inspiration, it's all over the board."

The exhibit of challenge designs that went on view March 31 in the library lobby for public online voting says it all: The showcased Titanic-themed outfits run the gamut from classic to bohemian to youthfully modern.

And while the designer clothing is first and foremost what's on deck, there will be plenty of ambience, beginning with pre-show magic by Phelyx the Mentalist Magician and a barking newsie shouting, "Read all about it!" and segueing into the show with its projected imagery, which Shigley calls nothing less than spectacular. "They're going to make people cry," she promises, in a voice one can't disbe-lieve. Bring a hankie.
