Drop The Bomb

Emily K. Harrison of Square Product Theatre can hardly stop laughing long enough to talk about 5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche, a comedy she says is "ridiculous, but still completely believable in a way that makes you think this could actually be happening." Though it was originally developed by Chicago's New Colony ensemble, Harrison found the story that unfolds around the annual quiche breakfast of the Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein in 1956 too sweet to pass over. The uncontrollable hysterics among her cast members haven't stopped since.

More About

Why? You might be able to guess that the plot takes some twists and turns related to the setting, and they do: The Commies drop the bomb during brunch, and the ladies take it from there. Suddenly, the show is about much more, from Cold War politics to the complete absurdity of the duck-and-cover drill.

"A lot of serious issues are dealt with in a very, very hilarious way," Harrison says. "It deals with messages through comedy, by sending an important message in a way people will feel more comfortable with and not have to walk about weeping." And with its all-female cast, she adds, Lesbians is a field day for women actors. "There are lots of plays with five dudes, but not a lot with women," Harrison notes.

5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche opens for a preview performance tonight at 8 p.m. at Wesley Chapel, 1290 Folsom Street in Boulder, and continues Thursdays through Saturdays through April 28 (no shows the weekend of April 12 to 14). Tomorrow night's show is a benefit for the Boulder County Arts Alliance; tickets are $20. For regular tickets, $14 to $16 (or two-for-one tonight and continuing on Thursdays), go to www.squareproducttheatre.org or call 800-838-3006.
March 29-31, 8 p.m.; April 5-7, 8 p.m.; April 19-21, 8 p.m.; April 26-28, 8 p.m., 2012
