Cora Vette (aka Reyna Von Vett), burlesque madame extraordinaire, has been getting back to basics: the vintage songs, costumes and vibe that pulled her into the burlesque scene to begin with. That's part of the concept behind a store she's opening with burlesque wife Eve Vette. To help cross-promote her myriad projects and make them into a more cohesive whole, she's breaking out her woodie and heading shoreside for some surf tunes. (A woodie is a wood-paneled station wagon used to haul surfboards to the beach back in the day. What did you think we were talking about, you perv?)
The result is Cora Vette's Woodie: Summer Surf Burlesque, this month's Black Box Burlesque show, featuring Eve Vette, Russia Roulette, Kitty Piston, Cherry Pop Pop Poppins, Frenchie Renard, Ophelia P. Cocque, Frangelica Love and special guests Betty Bumps and Miss Dirty Duvel of Vanity Dollz. "I'm pretty much going to be wearing Astroturf and flowers," Vette notes, "and we've got tassel-twirling to 'Misirlou' and 'Little Grass Shack.' We're going to do a song by the Astronauts -- they were from Boulder -- called 'Firewater.' And I believe some naughtiness will be happening to 'Good Vibrations.' I'm a little frightened to ask where that's going."
The renowned rooftop patio at Bar Standard, 1037 Broadway, will open for the season after the 8:30 p.m. show is over, so stick around for a cocktail. Surf's up! Tickets, $10 online or at the door ($25 for limited VIP seats and treatment), are available at www.coravette.com.
