Even in fitness-fanatical Denver, running thirteen sweaty miles through the center of town can be an off-putting notion. Fortunately, the organizers of this year's Kaiser Permanente Colfax Half Marathon have found a way for the race-impaired to cruise the urban romp in style.

The first annual Denver Art Scooter Parade will follow today's race route, showcasing the best, weirdest and most creative two-wheelers in town. In addition to celebrating the burgeoning art of the moped, the Art Scooter Parade will reflect the eclecticism and creative spirit of Colfax itself. "Colfax is such a diverse community," says Andrea Dowdy, executive director of the Colfax Half Marathon. "We wanted to create an element that celebrated its vibrancy. And we also saw an opportunity to create a new, true annual tradition that we can embrace year after year."
The Scooter Parade will provide a mobile cheering squad for the throngs of runners who take off from City Park at 7 a.m. And like all marathon endeavors, this one is a competition: The most creatively adorned scoots and riders will walk away with prizes, and the most skilled will receive a special honor named for late councilwoman and scooter enthusiast Carla Madison.
Scooterists, start your engines! Advance registration and a $25-per-person fee are required; visit www.runcolfax.org for more information.
