A Great Skate

The new Arvada Skate Park, which opened a few months ago, gets an official ribbon-cutting today when pro skaters Mike McGill (originator of the inverted 540-degree McTwist spin), 21-time X Games medalist Andy Macdonald and women's skating superstars Cara-Beth Burnside and Mimi Knoop drop in to demonstrate how to make the most of 42,000 square feet of concrete. Skate clinics and special "Kid Zone" activities will take place throughout the day.

The event is free, but bring some cash for raffle tickets: Prizes include GoPro cameras and complete skateboard setups, with all proceeds benefiting Grind for Life, a nonprofit that provides financial assistance to cancer patients.

"Dave Tuck, the guy who got the new Arvada park approved and helped build it and a lot of other great Colorado parks as a member of the Team Pain Skate Parks crew, was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer," explains Grind for Life founder Mike Rogers, himself a cancer survivor. "We've been helping him cover some of his long-distance travel expenses so he can get to his cancer-treatment appointments and get the best care, and he wanted to use the grand opening as an opportunity to give back and help provide for other cancer patients in the future."
