"We didn't really know what we were doing, but we had a great time and we sold some art," says Art Students League of Denver Summer Art Market founder Dennis Pendleton of the first-ever market. The event has done a lot of growing in the twenty years since then, but that doesn't mean the fest can't still add a few more tricks to its bag to celebrate the two-decade mark. This year's outdoor art fete, open today and tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., will include several new features, beginning with the Westword Wine Tent, where you'll be able to purchase a commemorative wine glass to taste a variety of handcrafted wines. In addition, several high-profile, League-related local artists who would not normally show in the market -- Pendleton, Homare Ikeda, Andrea Kemp, Rob Gratiot, Michael Gadlin and others -- will have work available as part of a benefit sale; artist Quang Ho is also hosting a drawing for one of his works on Sunday for folks who donate $75 or more to the League. On the sidelines, Menchie's will deal frozen yogurt with a gazillion topping choices and, for the first time, breakfast will be served. No wonder this event keeps growing. "It has such a community feel," adds spokeswoman Kim Estes. "Everyone likes coming and hanging out, and the art is affordable. We don't have to sell posters, because we sell real art that people can afford."
