All the Street's a Stage

To raise money in this dog-eat-dog world of local independent theater, you have to have an imagination -- at least that's what Susan Lyles of Denver's And Toto Too Theatre Company discovered as she led the woman-centric troupe through the ups and downs of play-making on the fly, in borrowed spaces. And though she says what she'd really like to do is host a series of flash-plays in elevators (each just long enough for the trip up and back again), Lyles has settled for tonight's Play Crawl on Tennyson Street, which, yeah, is some-thing you don't see every day, in any town. And Toto Too hosts the second annual crawl -- "The first was successful enough that merchants started asking me if I wanted to do it on a monthly basis," Lyles notes -- tonight beginning at 6 p.m. at the Oriental Theater, 4335 West 44th Avenue.

After a mixer at the theater, participants will split up into groups determined by colored wristbands and follow a guide through ten Tennyson Street businesses, galleries and studios to witness nine new one- to two-minute plays (and one "sculptformance") by an invited all-woman cast of playwrights. And once the whirlwind tour is over, everyone will end up back at the Oriental in time to laugh and dance the night away until midnight with live music, improv by Jane's Addiction and a silent auction.
