Beer, Sun and Fun

The Lyons Outdoor Games heads into its second decade this weekend with demos, clinics and events celebrating Colorado's outdoor lifestyle.

There are five kayak events on the schedule, most of them tomorrow and Sunday, including a down-river kayak race, a kayak slalom race, boater-cross races on the North Saint Vrain River, and the Adam Barron Memorial Creek Race on a section of South Saint Vrain Creek -- as well as two canine competitions, a BMX/mountain-bike dirt-jump contest and a 5K fun run.

But the biggest draw might just be the Burning Can Beer Festival hosted by the Oskar Blues Brewery, which was founded in Lyons. "Saturday is going to be super-exciting, because we'll have the Burning Can 5K, so people can feel like they've earned their beer, and we'll have the Big Air finals going on as a great spectator sport while people sample the best that Oskar Blues has to offer and the best canned beers from 35 of the top craft brewers in the country," says Oskar Blues spokesman Chad Melis. "It's always cool to have some of the top kayakers and other athletes in the world here in our small town enjoying the awesome terrain we have, and we do love to throw a good party."

The clinics and demos are free; the 5K is $25. For a full event schedule or to register for competitive events, visit www.lyonsoutdoorgames.com.
