Game On

Though the idea of video-game consoles conjures up the image of gamers sitting on couches, dancer and choreographer Emily Power has re-appropriated the controller-free, motion-sensing XBox Kinect for her new modern-dance performance, Unfolding Perception. To do it, Power worked with a sound designer and computer programmer to use the Kinect to create sounds as four dancers glide around the stage.

"The Kinect is reading the dancers' form," Power says. "The sound designer plugs in sounds related to body parts, or where their body parts are in space, so as they move, that creates sounds." This experimental approach is all part of what Power calls a study of perspective. The entire performance will toy with that idea, incorporating aerial dance from New York artist Linda Natoli as well as a rock-climbing wall for dancers to vertically explore. The audience also will be able to engage the Kinect creation with an installation in the lobby and a film projection of Natoli's aerial dance.

"My hope is that [the audience] can expand their perception of space and dimension from the images that we're giving them," says Power. "I want them to consider their perspective. When they're viewing something, what is it they're getting from that image?"

Unfolding Perception will run today through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at work|space at the Laundry, 2701 Lawrence Street. For more information and to purchase tickets -- $15 general admission and $12 for students online -- visit www.brownpapertickets.com/event/242759.
