Sure, you can watch your favorite movie at home on demand or via your Internet hookup, but that’s small-time. If you want to do it a little bigger, check out Film on the Rocks, the annual movie series that puts Colorado’s greatest entertainment venue, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, to good use. The series, which began June 2 and runs most Mondays through August 20, includes a band or two, or some other entertainment, before the show. Tonight’s bill might be one of the edgiest of the summer: dance music from Ishe; A Tom Collins, led by former Machine Gun Blues frontman Aaron Collins; and then Tropic Thunder, the controversial war comedy starring Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Matthew McConaughey, Nick Nolte, Tom Cruise, and Robert Downey Jr. as a black man (an Oscar-nominated role).

The music starts at 6:45 p.m. and the movie rolls at dusk; tickets are $12 for general admission, but there are VIP packages avail-able, including a Red Rocks Trading Post pre-party package for $30 and a party-bus option for $50 that includes dinner at the Rackhouse Pub and a party-bus ride to and from Red Rocks. The Rackhouse and Oskar Blues are also offering a chance to win tickets (eight pairs each week) to upcoming shows.
