Our little town has hit the big-time: Denver Comic Con is here, introducing a whole new level of geekdom to the Rocky Mountain West con-going community. The weekend event, a fundraiser for the locally based Comic Book Classroom after-school program and everything a comic-book nerd could wish for, officially kicks off tonight at 6 p.m. at the Colorado Convention Center, with celebrity guests, comic artists, gaming, cosplay, workshops, sci-fi speed dating, Jedi training and a whole lot more.
Who will be there? The list is ginormous and glorious, beginning at the top with a trio of stars -- Lauren Cohan, Steven Yeun and Chandler Riggs -- from the AMC hit The Walking Dead and continuing with, among many others, voice actors Billy West (Stimpy, Ren and Stimpy, and Philip J. Fry, Futurama) and Tom Kane (Yoda and many more), actress Kristen Bauer (Pam, True Blood), and Michael Uslan, comic-book historian and film producer (The Dark Knight). Dozens of comic artists (including Westword contributor and rising graphic novelist Noah Van Sciver) will people the con's Artist Alley, and CBC will host an activity area for kids; Filmapalooza will showcase local and national shorts as well as feature screenings today and tomorrow. And on Sunday evening, the Hard Rock Cafe, at 500 16th Street, will host the Rock Comic Con after-party starting at 9 p.m.; tix are $12 in advance or $15 at the door.
