Play It, Sam

You won't ever find a better opportunity to visit Rick's Cafe Americain -- the famed venue in Casablanca where star-crossed lovers Rick and Ilsa reconnected -- than tonight's 1940s World War II Era Ball at the Boulder Municipal Airport. And if you've been to the ball in previous years, then you already know it's a sliver of a precious moment in time, encapsulating all the joy that attended the end of the war.

"We're turning the hangar into Rick's," says organizer Khyentse James. "We’re going to have belly dancers, Rick, Sam, a roulette table that people can play on, and big bands. Tangiers Moroccan Restaurant will be in there serving shish kebabs, and we'll be showing Casablanca in the back of the hangar." And the usual WWII re-enactors (and authentic vehicles and planes) will be in attendance. Rick's isn't where it stops, either: Attendees can expect appearances by Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe; swing dancing; a hairstylist; a photography area where you can get your picture taken on a paper moon -- and much, much more.

The ball starts at 6 p.m. and runs until 1 a.m.; admission is $30 in advance, $35 at the door. The Boulder Municipal Airport is at 3393 Airport Road in Boulder; visit www.1940sball.org for tickets and information.
Sat., June 16, 6 p.m.-1 a.m., 2012
