Across the Great Divide

Are all modern Democrats socialists? Are Republicans all Tea Party fascists who’ve fabricated history to prove their points? Maybe not, but the public perception on both sides of the aisle makes it seem that way, much to the consternation of Brookings Institution political analyst and Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne, who thinks that, in better times, a little political yin/yang is a good thing. But these, he argues, are not better times. In his new book, Our Divided Political Heart: The Battle for the American Idea in an Age of Discontent, he dissects the impassable divide between parties in current politics. Dionne’s position that political counterpoint is an American cornerstone is based in historical examples, but he also points out how it can go awry and what needs to be done to fix our unbalanced political divide, which at its heart pits individualism against community.

That taken, the discussion could get lively tonight when Dionne hits Denver to argue the issues and sign copies of Our Divided Heart at 7:30 p.m. at the Tattered Cover Book Store, 2526 Colfax Avenue. You might even learn something. Go to www.tatteredcover.com or call 303-322-7727 for details.
