Flying High

When pilot Gary Rower started planning his July 4 air show in the mountain town of Dillon, he had no idea he’d also be attempting to set two world records.

“I have watched the sunset over the Dillon Marina and over the Breckenridge ski area for years and thought those are absolutely spectacular venues for an air show,” he says. “It wasn’t until we did research that we realized that no one had ever even attempted an air show at these altitudes.”

Rower plans to do just that, starting at 9:30 a.m., when he’ll do tricks in a vintage plane over Lake Dillon and attempt a record for the world’s highest air show over a body of water. Then he’ll go for the record for the world’s highest air show ever at 11:30 a.m. over Peaks Nine and Ten at Breckenridge Ski Resort. The Highest Show on Earth will be a solo act, as Rower’s flying partner, Buck Roetman, crashed during a show in Idaho; Roetman walked away with only a sprained ankle, but his plane was destroyed.

See the free show at Lake Dillon Marina, 300 Marina Drive, or from Breckenridge’s Riverwalk Center Lawn. For more information, visit www.highestshowonearth.com. Both towns will have a variety of Fourth of July celebrations going on around the shows; for a full schedule of events, check out www.townofdillon.com and www.gobreck.com.
