Still Waters
When the Clyfford Still Museum gained access to the modern-art luminary’s personal collection, the curators got more than they bargained for. In addition to Still’s abstract-expressionist masterpieces, the museum’s archives host the entirety of his personal record collection — hundreds of vinyl discs that range from classical orchestration to Southern gospel.

“He liked his music as interesting as his art,” says museum spokeswoman Irene Weygandt. “And he listened to music while he painted. While we can’t be certain which songs contributed to which works, I think we can all agree that music has an emotional impact on us, our art and our worlds.”
On Thursday, Colorado Symphony Orchestra resident conductor Scott O’Neil will explore the connection between art and music in a talk on Still’s classical collection. O’Neil poured over Still’s musical influences to prepare for his presentation, which will feature audio samples. Museum organizers plan to dissect the other genres in Still’s collection at future talks.
