Peak Performance

In Colorado, the Rocky Mountains are notorious for attracting slightly crazy wilderness enthusiasts — especially along the ridge lines of its highest (and most treacherous) mountains, the Fourteeners. Last summer, physician Jon Kedrowski and meteorologist Chris Tomer took on those peaks with an approach that no one had attempted before: They slept, from sunset to sunrise, on top of all 55 Colorado Fourteeners, an act of brilliant insanity chronicled in Sleeping on the Summits: Colorado Fourteener High Bivys.

More About

“The special thing about it is the way they climbed,” says publicist Linda Doyle. “Nobody starts at one in the afternoon; these guys climbed in the most dangerous part of the day.” After all, hiking in an alpine thunderstorm is a near death wish — and that wasn’t the only unconventional strategy the duo employed. “In the end,” Doyle notes, “it’s an adventure journal, a dream two guys had and pursued without backing down.”

And thanks to decades of mountaineering experience, they lived to tell the tale, which they’ll do tonight at 7:30 p.m. (as well as show photos from their adventure) at the LoDo Tattered Cover, 1628 16th Street. For more information, visit www.tatteredcover.com or call 303-436-1070.
