Sex trafficking and gender violence continue to be serious problems around the world, says RedLine director PJ D'Amico, which is why the art gallery and studio is showing Off the Beaten Path: Violence, Women and Art, a traveling exhibition that focuses on female empower-ment and awareness.

Curated by Randy Rosenberg of Oakland-based Art Works for Change, the show brings together pieces by 32 artists from all over the world (including Yoko Ono!) that work to dismantle the culture of violence. "I think that RedLine's role is to sort of use art to change how we conceptualize our relationships," explains D'Amico. "So it will all be done through positive and powerful images of women and girls and ideas of how to empower and engage young sisters."

Among the pieces are Yoko Inoue's "Untitled," a photograph inspired by communities where women address domestic violence by gathering outside of a house and pounding on pots and pans, and Susan Plum's installation of ornate brooms, which address the disappearance of women in Juarez, Mexico. Plum will be at the opening to perform "Luz y Solidaridad," a live piece that connects to her installation in which a group of women symbolically sweep away perpetrators of violence.

Off the Beaten Path opens tonight with a free reception from 7 to 10 p.m. at RedLine, 2350 Arapahoe Street, and runs through July 29. For more information, go to www.redlineart.org or www.artworksforchange.org.
