Round and Round

The humble art of hula-hooping has enjoyed a revival of late, with a new generation discovering the joys of the purposeful swivel. As an exercise, hula-hooping is hard to beat: It combines cardio, strength training and a kind of moving Zen meditation. (Let your mind go and you can circle forever, but think too much and the damn hoop falls right to the ground.)

Today, Little Man Ice Cream invites hoopers to show their stuff in its third annual Hula Hoop Contest, a competition to find Denver’s most athletic and unique hula artists. And while endurance is an important factor in this high-stakes competition (winners vie for tickets to Water World, among other attractions), judges will reward originality over duration.

“A good hooper is someone who thinks outside the box, someone who gets creative and uses their imagination,” says Little Man’s Loren Martinez. “There’s more to hooping than just the hips.”
