Tread Lightly

The downhill mountain-biking trails at Winter Park’s Trestle Bike Park will see some serious thrills and spills next week when the Colorado Freeride Festival hits the slopes, but today’s action is decidedly mellower, says Ashley Skrdlant, spokeswoman for the annual TreadFest Charity Mountain Biking Festival. “The Tread Head Rec Ride is a fun, non-competitive recreational ride great for families and groups of friends who just want to come up and have a good time,” Skrdlant says. “There’s live music, beer, food, drinks, and trails for riders of all ability levels. Everything goes to benefit both the National Sports Center for the Disabled and the American Red Cross Mile High Chapter, so it’s for a great cause.”

And with the exception of the family fun ride on the Frasier River Trail, “we’re mostly staying on the resort’s trails this year,” she adds. “There are trails that are accessible to climb, and you can also purchase a full-day lift ticket for only $15. We’re really excited to be partnering with the resort this year because they have so many trails for all abilities and do a great job of maintaining their trails.”

TreadFest registration is available online at www.treadfest.com ($75/adult, $35/youth sixteen and under, or for the festival and meal only) or on site from 6 to 9 a.m. The Tread Head Rec Ride starting line will be open from 7 to 9:45 a.m.; the Avery Brewing Tread Head beer festival opens at 10 a.m.; a BBQ lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; and Sports Authority will hold bike clinics at noon and 1 p.m.
