Boulder mystery author Stephen White is one of our own, and that’s reason enough for Coloradans to follow his long-running series of Dr. Alan Gregory detective tales. But White’s yarns are good enough to have kept him on the national bestseller lists for years, with no end in sight. Except for one thing: There is an end in sight.

With the publication of his latest, Line of Fire, imminent, White issued a statement announcing that it was “the beginning of the end, the penultimate book in the Alan Gregory series,” the first half of a two-part series conclusion. To a certain cross-section of readers, that’s something akin to J.K. Rowling ending the Harry Potter series.

“Why am I ending the series?” White asks. “The easiest honest answer is that it’s a good time to do so; I prefer to end the series too soon rather than to extend it too long. The complicated answer, also honest, is that publishing is changing in ways that are as unpredictable as they are exciting and revolutionary.”

In Line of Fire, clinical psychologist Gregory begins by taking a break from mystery-solving and intrigue to return to his professional practice, until — of course — he becomes ensnared by new secrets and twists of fate.
