Australian exploitation — or Ozploitation — films don’t come much more obscure than Road Games, the story of a trucker named Quid (Stacy Keach) who stalks a possible serial killer across the Australian highways while trying to deliver a load of meat to market. A pushy hitchhiker/sidekick played by ’80s scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis and a supporting cast of Outback oddballs add to the fun, while the nagging question of whether it’s actually Quid doing the killing gives this flick a nice twist. Set the whole thing in some jaw-dropping locations and end the movie with a bizarre low-speed, high-tension chase scene, and you have a unique film that’s been unduly forgot-ten.
“On top of being a top-notch Ozploitation film, it also slides nicely into an offshoot of slasher movies that were coming out in the early ’80s with a little different finesse to [them],” says Keith Garcia, programming manager for the Denver Film Society. “This is a nice thriller, [from] back when thrillers were still kind of making rules and being smart and edgy.”
