Musketeer Gripweed

Straight Razor Revival
Self released

The moniker of this Loveland-based act might be a reference to the character that John Lennon plays in the film How I Won the War, but the music of Musketeer Gripweed is far from sounding like the Beatles — or anything even remotely British, for that matter. Rather, the band channels the South on songs like "Thief," which is the meatiest cut on this swampy ride. While "Catfish Bait" speeds along with a fast country backbeat, "Mama Knows" and the gospel-tinged "Poison" are more relaxed, as singer Jason Downing evokes Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson at times. And with Black Crowes/North Mississippi Allstars guitarist Luther Dickinson laying down fiery picking and vocals on two cuts, Musketeer Gripweed has delivered a disc that's razor- sharp.
