Four years from now, when the Summer Olympics return to beam in from Rio, rugby -- last played as an Olympic sport in 1924 -- will make an auspicious return to the world games. Prepare for pure action when it does: Olympic rugby will be strictly sevens rugby -- the rough-and-tumble quickie version, with tighter seven-man teams competing in fifteen-minute matches. But you don't have to wait four years to see sevens action: We've got plenty of it coming up at Infinity Park at Glendale, our own local rugby center of the universe. "Sevens is just launching big-time," says Glendale Rugby spokesman Drew Anneberg. “It's a lot faster; it's all about pure speed and finesse."

Today, in particular, you'll have an opportunity to see how it works, when top sevens stars and teams from around the world congregate in Glendale for the Serevi RugbyTown Sevens Tournament, beginning at noon. It's all part of a touring tournament and youth workshop series organized by superstar Waisale Serevi of Fiji, aka "the King of Rugby Sevens," who will appear at the event in person, along with English player Ben Gollings and Argentina's Santiago Gomez Cora, playing together for the Serevi Selects, one of eight teams competing for a $10,000 prize.
