Let’s Ride!

Some of Denver’s favorite things are beer, bikes and bands, and you’ll find all three and more today at New Belgium’s Tour de Fat. The annual celebration of the bicycle kicks off with a giant participatory bike parade, then segues into a day of goofy cycling contests, live music and delicious beer that’s fun for the whole family. Well, the beer part is just for the grownups, but there’s plenty for the under-21s to enjoy. “It’s a bike event with beer, not the other way around,” promises Matt Kowal, Tour de Fat’s impresario.

More About

New Belgium will coordinate a car-for-bike swap during which a local will give up his or her car in exchange for a sweet new pedal-powered ride. Proceeds benefit the Denver Cruisers and Bike Denver, and the whole festival is dedicated to sustainability, so you can feel good about a day spent riding your bike, rocking out and drinking beer.

Registration for the parade starts at 9 a.m., and you’ll be riding by 10; the remaining festivities run until 4 p.m. on the west side of City Park. Admission is free, with a $5 suggested donation to ride in the parade. For more information and a full schedule, visit www.newbelgium.com/events/tour-de-fat.
Sat., Sept. 8, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., 2012
