Bottoms Up

The Great American Beer Festival runs from October 11-13, bringing with it 580 breweries, 2,700 beers, 49,000 thirsty beer lovers and all the pomp and circumstance associated with what is the biggest, best beer fest in the world. But it also brought a lot of headaches, as not everyone who wanted tickets was able to buy them. Lucky for those folks, there are hundreds of other craft beer-related events going on around town all week, from tap takeovers and beer dinners to brewery tours, meet-and-greets and parties.

How to decide which ones to do? Kristen Kozik says in our Q&A with her that people need to have a strategy: “Determine what you like from craft beer week. Do you want to hit sours, IPAs, wood-aged? Do you want to hit breweries or beer bars that they haven't had a chance to see yet? Focus on what you want to experience that week and go from there.”

Need a few examples of what’s on tap? Oskar Blues is throwing a double top-secret It's All About the Package party at Blake Street Tavern tonight at 9:30 p.m. -- one in which they’ll review a new beer and a new can. The The party is free, but to get in, you need to print out an invite from the Facebook page or show it to the doorman on your smartphone. There will also be live music by Halden Wofford & the Hi Beams and gigantic giveaways. And then there is Freshcraft, which will tap Big Brown Rye, a special beer that it brewed in collaboration with Durango's Ska Brewing and Peach Street Distillers tonight at 10 p.m. Big Brown Rye is a high gravity brown made with rye malt and aged for three months in Peach Street bourbon barrels.
