As we cast our ballots to vote for our next president, Square Product Theatre — in conjunction with 43 other theater groups around the nation — will help us remember the other 44 chiefs of state who’ve won in elections past. The regional premier of 44 Plays for 44 Presidents will feature a five-person cast performing two-minute vignettes — everything from a hilarious musical tribute to Richard Nixon’s non-Watergate political accomplishments to a poignant look at the personal tragedies Abraham Lincoln faced in his lifetime.
The Plays for Presidents Festival, as the project is being called nationwide, will culminate in a video composite of the productions, with the Colorado group contributing a tape of their Teddy Roosevelt performance.
“What we really hope people walk away with is that these are the men we’ve chosen at one point or another to lead our nation,” says director Emily K. Harrison. “And sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t. But ultimately, the choice does lie in our hands.” The audience will get to make a choice of their own at the end of the night by voting for the subject of the 45th play they’ll see: second-term Barack Obama or Mitt Romney.
Exercise your right to vote beginning with tonight’s premiere at 7:30 p.m. The show runs Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (with no performance on October 27) through November 3 at the Dairy Center for the Arts, 2590 Walnut Street in Boulder. Tickets, $20 general admission, $16 students and seniors, are available at the door or in advance at thedairy.org or 303-444-7328. For more information, visit www.squareproducttheatre.org.
