Moon Walk with Kubrick

We’ve seen Stanley Kubrick’s iconic images hundreds of times; Room 237 from The Shining and the spinning bone that turns into a satellite from 2001: A Space Odyssey are just a few. But what if those images held secret messages? That’s what director Jay Weidner is proposing in Kubrick’s Odyssey, a documentary in which he searches the two films for hidden meanings.

Pablo Kjolseth, director of the International Film Series in Boulder, got the idea to screen this film after watching Room 237, another Kubrick documentary; that one explores several different theories about Kubrick’s films, including Weidner’s belief that Kubrick was hired to fake the 1969 U.S. moon landing and then tried to give away that secret in The Shining. “I love Kubrick, and I’ve seen his stuff over and over again. But I have to admit that Weidner’s series had me looking at them in a different light,” Kjolseth says.

The documentary will screen at 4 p.m. today in Muenzinger Auditorium at the University of Colorado at Boulder, with Weidner there in person for a Q&A session; tickets are $4. Not coincidentally, Kubrick’s films Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Shining will show on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, so viewers can watch for hidden clues and draw their own conclusions.
