Drawing Out the Dead
The Navajo Street Art District has been putting on Día de Los Muertos-inspired gatherings for more than two decades, and this year, it will feature an innovative addition: Galleries along the strip – including Zip 37, NEXT and Pirate – will invite revelers to create their own pieces of trading-card art.

These handcrafted, handheld spooky works are then meant to be traded like baseball cards or left at the galleries as decoration for the upcoming Denver Arts Week. During that week, artist trading cards by Katie Hoffman, Kym Bloom, Savarie and more will be raffled off; to enter to win, visit any of the participating Navajo Street Arts galleries between November 2 and 10.
"The artist trading cards are a way to collect mini pieces of art without money having to exchange hands," says Valerie Savarie, artist and Zip 37 co-op member. Co-hosted by local artist and trading-card mastermind Jerry Simpson, participants in the Day of the Dead Trading Card Workshop are encouraged to go along with the haunted theme and take the tiny art to a three-dimensional or sculptural level if they so choose.
The workshop runs today from 12:30 to 4 p.m. in the 3600 block of Navajo Street; admission is free. For more information, visit www.navajostreetartdistrict.com.
