Drawing Out Serge Bloch

Avid newspaper readers can find the work of French illustrator Serge Bloch during the week in the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, the Chicago Tribune, New York Times and the Los Angeles Times; his work also appears in Time and New York magazines. Bloch has illustrated more than 300 books for children and adults, including You Are What You Eat and Other Mealtime Hazards and The Tweets of Steve Martin, and has been involved in two animated series aired around the world.

Today, as part of the Starz Denver Film Festival, Bloch will showcase his short films in The Whimsical World of Serge Bloch, at the Denver FilmCenter. Afterward, he’ll walk over to the Tattered Cover for a reception, during which he’ll sign books, answer questions and give away toys from his animated series SamSam.

“He brings a sense of whimsy and humor that I feel is universal,” says event organizer Neal Sokol, who first worked with Bloch when he curated an exhibition of children’s-book illustrators that also included Maurice Sendak and Margret and H.A. Rey. “Anyone can relate to the humor that Serge puts on page and screen. What I find inspirational about his work is that he’s always challenging himself to reach new heights.”
