Feeling Lucky

Poet and writer Daniel Grandbois lets his writing lead him when he works on something new. “I try to write every day without thinking too much about it,” he explains. “After a couple months of this, a book might begin to take shape. Only then do I bring the thinking in to further shape what’s already making itself evident.” That’s how Unlucky Lucky Tales, one of Grandbois’s fantastic works, came about. But the author’s penchant for reading about science also planted some seeds. “It has certainly opened me to worlds of perception that I would not have otherwise imagined, and thereby influenced my writing." he says. "In ‘Flora,’ for example, what seemingly looks like a conversation between father and daughter about the dangers ‘out there’ is actually the story of the difficulties plants faced in migrating out of water and colonizing land.”

The illustrated book contains surreal, impossible explanations for modern mysteries, and Grandbois is as hilarious and inventive as ever. “This book," he explains," described by many as ‘Dr. Seuss for adults,’ is a literary version of the originality, darkness, craziness, playfulness and joy of the band Slim Cessna’s Auto Club,” of which Grandbois has been a part for many years.
