The whole concept of a quote-along movie screening — wherein the audience is invited to join favorite characters in iconic spiels — is so inherently awesome that there’s really only one thing that could make it any better: the thrill of the unexpected.
“We started adding interactive props and pyrotechnics, always trying to outdo ourselves with something sillier and more absurd, something that no one will expect, because everybody already knows what quotes are coming,” explains Greg MacLellan, the director of interactive programming at Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas, who’s bringing the Labyrinth Quote-Along to the International Film Series at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
And this film in particular is going to be great because it has everything that makes a perfect quote-along flick, MacLellan says: “It was the best way to sample everything: It was made in the ’80s, so there’s the sense of nostalgia; it has songs that are really, really great; and David Bowie is just so amazing. It captures the essence of our sing-along shows, but then it comes back to these fist-pumper, ‘You have no power over me!’ lines — and you get to imitate David Bowie, too. Who doesn’t like to sound all breathy and sexy like David Bowie?”
Labyrinth Quote-Along runs tonight and tomorrow night at 8 p.m. in the VAC basement auditorium on the CU-Boulder campus; tickets are $6 to $7. Call 303-492-1531 or visit www.internationalfilmseries.com.
