Polarity

King of Hearts
Tapestry

Inspired by the music of the Yellowjackets and the late Don Grolnick (once a member of fusion groups Steps Ahead and Dreams), Polarity displays some fine solo work throughout King of Hearts. Fronted by local saxophonists Pete Lewis and Clare Church, the band uses fusion as a backbone and injects a lot of its songs with fresh and energetic arrangements. Lewis and Church, who also front the post-bop Lewis/Church Quintet, deliver some exciting playing on a variety of saxophones, while pianist Ben Markley and guitarist Eric Wiggs also occasionally stretch out. The rhythm section also serves as an integral part of the orchestration on many of the cuts: Electric bassist Ron Bland, who lays down a killer solo on "Simple," and drummer Patrick Lewis, who's featured on "Song for Patrick," hold down some incredibly tight and in-the-pocket grooves.
