Alex Galvan was in El Salvador teaching English to poor kids when he first learned about his ties to terrorism.
It was last March, during the patch of the calendar most universities cut out for spring break. But instead of beer-bonging his way through a beach week or posting up on the couch, the Florida State University political science and international relations major caught a flight south.
The trip wasn't unusual: Galvan is hardwired for giving. The Tampa native helped open a free clinic for the uninsured in Tallahassee and has taught impoverished Moroccans about the importance of clean water. Working young Salvadorans through their ABCs was merely his latest adventure.
Galvan touched down outside of the city of Zacatecoluca, located in a rural region still bleeding from years of civil war and poverty. A bout of malaria was already swimming through his bloodstream. Soon enough, armed thugs were asking about the American stranger. Be careful, a family member familiar with the area had counseled before the trip, and don't tell anyone you're Muslim.
But Galvan's problems wouldn't come from El Salvador. They would arrive via e-mail just a few days in, sent by panicked colleagues from the Muslim Student Association at Florida State. The campus newspaper had run an ad claiming the MSA was aligned with terrorists. Galvan anxiously waited out the 30 minutes it took for his shoddy Internet connection to spit out a copy.
The ad climbed half the page, its top splashed with bold lettering: "FORMER LEADERS OF THE MUSLIMS STUDENT ASSOCIATION (MSA): WHERE ARE THEY NOW?" Below were ten names, some familiar echoes from the news. Each was followed by lines identifying their terrorist ties, words like "al-Qaeda," "Taliban" and "jihad" shouting from the page.
"I took it almost as a personal threat, because it was citing how all these people were presidents of MSA, and I'm a president of MSA," Galvan recalls.
Florida State's Muslims were used to low-dose bigotry. This was panhandle Florida. Galvan regularly endured barked taunts as he made his Friday trek to the mosque dressed in traditional prayer robes. It was just part of life in the deep-fried South.
But the ad suggested that his group was a pilot program for the terrorists of tomorrow. Nothing could be further from the truth. Normally concerned with sponsoring beach volleyball games and barbecues, the MSA's most political activity was a yearly Fast-a-Thon to raise awareness about hunger. Galvan tapped out angry e-mails to the paper and school administrators, looking for a retraction or condemnation.
He was met with silence. The paper wouldn't print his full-length defense, nor could FSU president Eric Barron be bothered to return his calls. "It was really alarming to us that no one at our university was willing to step up," he says. "We seemed to be alone on this issue."
The ad did reel in the attention of one group: the FBI. Two years earlier, a mosque near FSU had been torched. A few hours east, in Gainesville, Reverend Terry Jones had become a news-cycle regular for periodically threatening to burn the Koran. The FBI wanted a sit-down, worried that some backcountry type might see the ad and reach for a gun.
"In the Muslim community, we've seen how far this goes," Galvan says. "People don't just kill a Muslim for no reason. They do it because they've developed an image in their head of Muslims as an evil threat to their lives and families."
But while Galvan and his friends met with the FBI, a 74-year-old man in Sherman Oaks, California, was most likely gloating over his latest incitement of panic. Over the years, David Horowitz had turned taunting Muslims into a spectator sport. The Florida State ad was just another slash in his win column.
The Switch-Hitting Radical
Like many of the '60s generation, David Horowitz changed his political coloring with seasoning.
His career as an antagonist began in Berkeley with the budding New Left movement, which spliced lecture-hall idealism with radical street work. He edited Ramparts magazine, the '60s muckraking venture that printed the first exposés on the CIA's role in Vietnam, allowing him to rub shoulders with revolutionary royalty like writer Noam Chomsky and the Black Panthers.
But Horowitz's feelings for the left would eventually sour. He spied hypocrisy in the liberals who flung indignation at Lyndon Johnson yet trumpeted dictators like Ho Chi Minh. This growing unease came to a head in 1974, when Betty Van Patter's beaten corpse was pulled out of the San Francisco Bay. Horowitz believed that Van Patter, who'd kept the books at Ramparts, had been slain by Black Panthers trying to cover up an embezzlement scheme. The killing was never solved.
By the 1980s, Horowitz had switched teams. He founded what would later become the Freedom Center in suburban Los Angeles, producing pamphlets that urged Republicans to take up arms. "The Art of Political War" called for the GOP to adopt an aggressive activist tone that would come to be its trademark. Karl Rove was a fan. The none-too-subtle "Hating Whitey" scorched liberals for unfairly blaming whites for the problems confronted by minorities.
Some background on the MSA so all you ignorant progressives can educate yourselves:
"As revealed in documents seized by the FBI and entered as evidence in a Texas court, the Muslim Students Association is a legacy project of the Muslim Brotherhood. The Brotherhood is an organization formed by a Hitler-admiring Muslim named Hasan al-Bannain Egypt in 1928. It was designed to function as the spearpoint of the Islamo-fascist movement and its crusade against the West. The Brotherhood spawned al-Qaeda and Hamas. Its doctrines make up the core of the terrorist jihad conducted by organizations such as Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah, Hamas and the government of Iran. Its agendas have been clear since its creation: infiltration, subversion and global terror with world conquest as the goal.…To establish one Islamic state of united Islamic countries, one nation under one leadership whose mission will be to reinforce adherence to the law of Allah...and the strengthening of the Islamic presence in the world arena....The goal...is the establishment of a world Islamic state."""Founded by members of the Muslim Brotherhood, MSA was named in Mohammed Akram’s 1991 memorandum as one of the Brotherhood’s likeminded “organizations of our friends” who shared the common goal of destroying America and turning it into a Muslim nation. These “friends” were described by the Brotherhood as groups that could help teach Muslims “that their work in America is a kind of grand jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and ‘sabotaging’ its miserable house by their hands ... so that ... God’s religion Islam is made victorious over all other religions.”"Sura 9 verse 5 and 29But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular [Islamic] prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger nor, acknowledge the Religion of Truth from among the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizyah with willing submission and feel themselves subdued.
For those who have not been following this thread, Westword deleted a post of mine which was totally factual but critical of Islam and non-Muslims who defend Islam. What is so incredible about this is that Westword, supposedly the hipsters, the tatoo wearing, pierced, stand up to the establishment, blah blah blah, crowd, are cowards when it comes to the topic of Islam, they bow and scrape before Islam just like the rest of the liberals. There is no Westword where Islam gains any sort of control, they crush alternative youth. You should be ashamed of yourselves, truly pathetic. Restore my prior post, man up.
MOST PEOPLE DO NOT CHOOSE THEIR GODS, THEY CREATE THEM! not my words, crs speaker/writer of quote, apologies.....
To accept islam as a legitimate religion is to condone a cultural terrorism on women, gays, and anyone that believes in freedom from religion.
Tolerance of others beliefs does not mean we have to accept hate groups such as muslims. Until muslims learn to treat women as humans, they should never be accepted.
It is important to bring attention to such personalities as Horowitz, as you have so informatively done with your thorough research, to make aware to others that may not see thru his manipulative and coercing tactics. The power of language. Words create and destroy. When people with exceptional vocabulary, communication, and psychological skills are paid propagandists, and of the select few that are allowed to abuse freedoms of speech and morph opinions into freedom of hate speeches, those people are inciting violent and/or riotous acts; there should be some sort of repercussions. There is certainly a charge for it within the field of criminal justice and law enforcement. It is men like Horowitz that take the maxim "all's fair in love and war" to a different level, becoming catalysts, in the least, for those such as Anders Brevik that are motivated to action to kill because of fallible arguments that perpetuate non-truths as racist gospel. Brevik is the extreme so the world has been made aware of him, yet more damage spreads with the embers of flame that spark to fuel fires of fear and hate and so goes the slow burn spreading hate and killing more than Brevik ever could.
What an absolute joke of an article. Horowitz incenses the whackjob left because he exposes their bullshit and hypocrisy at every turn, many times using their own tactics that he learned as said former whackjob. Exposing radical Islamic jihadists shouldn't be a left or right issue; unfortunately many on the left have taken on the mantle of defending radical Islam, even as their behaviors and actions completely contradict their stated crusades (gay/women's rights anyone?) As Swenson correctly pointed out numerous times in the article, Horowitz is spot on in what he's exposing. And, of course, it's still those pesky right-wing "islamophobes" that are to blame for the violence:"After Anders Breivik launched an attack on a Norway youth camp that left 77 dead last year, police found a manifesto he penned on the "Islamic Colonization of Europe." Spencer was cited 162 times; Geller was mentioned in 12 instances."Don't you just hate it when Christians go on fucking killing sprees after anti-Christian and anti-Jesus "art" and propaganda like "Piss Christ"? Yeah, me too. The sentiment in the quote sounds familiar, though.....kinda like that 300-view youtube video caused the "protests" in Libya too, right?
It is so pathetic to see naive non-Muslims in the West defend Islam. Doing so PROVES that you do not have the first clue what Islam is or who Muhammad was. If anything you have a kindergarden understanding of the whole world, just wanting to get along with everyone. Allah hates you, Islam hates you, it has utter contempt for you. To merely recite truths again here would be a waste of time, your mind is closed, your mind is made up, but you are wrong. Modern naive liberalism in the West is destroying the West, allowing Islam within our borders will destroy the West, there is zero chance for any other outcome. PLEASE take the time to learn the truth about Islam, don't waste your whole life on earth, however much longer you live, being a fool on this subject. A good place to use to start your learning is to check www.thereligionofpeace.com each day. Watch the jihad attacks daily, read the historical articles, start, at least, to learn the truth about Islam. In defending Islam and Muhammad you are defending an ideology and history of destruction that makes Hilter and the Nazis pale by comparison. But again, whatever I say you will just roll your eyes and smirk. PLEASE, stop that, wake up, learn the truth.
and what about RUBY RIDGE IDAHO? Randy Weaver was a decorated Vietnam veteran. the FBI wanted him to infiltrate the Aryan Nation and he said NO. so the FBI set him up and an undercover informant asked him to saw off a shotgun to an illegal limit and he did it thinking UC agent was friend. so they again asked him to spy on the Aryan Nation and he said NO. Weaver was blackmailed for sawing off shotgun, the FBI staked out his place for over a year at a cost of $3million. FBI shot his 13yr old son in back, killed his dog, shot and killed his wife in face while in doorway holding newborn baby! and then FBI paid him a measly $3million for his losses BE WARY OF ALPHABET SOUP agencies and the KOOL-AID they serve to wash down!
you believe the FBI? One incorrect salacious fallible document from one undercover informant in FBI stating that David Koresh was having sex with girls under sixteen caused the deaths of many civilians that were practising their choice in freedom of religion. Janet Reno brought out tanks on her own people! This incident is what Timothy james McVeigh was incensed about and therefore plotted and succeeded in bombing the FBI building in Oklahoma City! Now the incident at WACO was a gun grab only they succeeded by killing a lot of people. Koresh had a massive arsenal along with his followers so the FBI wanted to take him out and they did horrendously firebombing children as well.
@dcCU But you will still be the first one to grab a prayer rug and crawl around on the floor five times a day under Islam in order to save your skin. Christians who actually know God will refuse to submit to Islam and therefore be persectuted and killed.
@rockymissouri1 Some smamy little creep must have been too stupid to respond to my comment at the beginning of this thread so they flagged it and got it deleted instead. If you think Horowitz is a bad you should learn about Muhammad, he married a six year old girl still playing with dolls and consummated the marriage when she was nine.
@Philo99 All religions have their extremes.....Fundamentalist evangelical Christians are just as nasty as any Taliban.....Same thing with the Zionist settlers...
you must be listening to misinformation because true Islam gives women more rights than American women when dealing with issues such as money and property in marriage. Divorce is even conducted in true Islam. You speak of Islam like there are no factions of the group and you spread hate and incorrect info not even knowing what ur talking about. Prejudice sterotypes are inflammatory! you should put ur ass on ur shoulders its probably smarter thatn your head. and TIMMY wth are you reading? Each Western religion: Christianity, Judaism, and Islam have sectors that are extreme. Keep blowing that hot air and maybe you can move the rock ur living under!
@Philo99 The worst thing about Islam that should get people in the West concerned about Islam even more than their treatment of women, gays, or non-Muslims is that from birth Muslims are not allowed to leave Islam! Their own MOTHER will kill them if they say they don't believe in Islam and Muhammad! What kind of sick demented hell that gets mothers to kill their own children can possibly be defended by Westerners? Islam is more like an army and anyone who quits is a deserter who must be killed. Well freedom of religion, freedom FROM religion as you like to put it, is eliminated by Islam. So any Muslim in America right from the start can't subscribe to the CORE foundational principle of what America is. Yet even so-called conservatives in the West are living in some sort of crazy bizarre fantasy land where they believe Islam can be integrated into American society. Islam has no place in America at all, the only thing America should do is take ex-Muslims, Muslims who want to escape Islam but who would be killed in any land where Islam exists. America can be an island of freedom for them, unless we allow Islam to spread here, then there will be no place for them to run.
@dcCU You should do some research on the MSA, who founded them and what the Muslim Brotherhood (one of Obama's favorite allies) thinks of them.
@Timmy @dcCU christians and muslims and jews have persecuted others for centuries ever heard of the CRUSADES? and for you to denigrate the way a religion prays and use as sarcastic slander shows ur under the influence of something that has taught you to name call and persecute others. ummm i dont think they crawl un prayer they prostrate.and ur statement on christians...killed what u r saying essentially is thta islam will rise and defeat christians, you dont know me,u dont know what i would will do. ur a name caller that cant even argue as a adult. go smoke some more weed u dumb stoner. WAKE UP!
@Timmy @rockymissouri1 Sounds like the problem is not with Islam.....it is with YOU. Perhaps you should think about that.........
@rockymissouri1 Your comment is literally insane, but it isn't your fault, you just don't know the truth about Islam. That is a shame. Do you know that Muhammad was a terrorist? Do you know that Muihammad raped, killed, stole, lied, married a six year old girl? The so-called extremist terrorists are actually following the example of Muhammad! Do you know that there is a DEATH PENALTY for leaving Islam? Please read articles at www.thereligionofpeace.com and educate yourself so that you won't continue to make such silly comments.
@dcCU You are delusional. Learn the truth about Islam and quit making a fool of yourself.
@Timmy god bless america! jesus mary and joseph! bloody hell! how u have so much info?did u manage to escape the claws of islam? ur just hateful and uneducateed BIGOT may the powers help you see thru ur misery and grant you some peace from the demons haunting and controlling you. i will pray for you? do you prefer me prostrated islam style? or on my knees as the catholics do? or shall i lie in bed and pray? or stand on my feet at the wailing wall? which prayer method will work most effectively? none? all of the above? are u agnostic? atheist? satanist? what your deal?
@rockymissouri1 Tragically you are completely detached from reality. But also, in defending Islam you are no different than someone who defended Nazis, and you are spitting on the graves of all those who have suffered under Islam even in our time. No interpretation is allowed in Islam, it is all in black and white, and it is pure evil. But you can just smirk about that and go watch Ellen on TV.
@Timmy @rockymissouri1 There is nothing wrong with Islam .....only the way some interpret it.. The same way others interpret Christianity into something it is not....
You have a serious problem, and need help.. Your seething hatred betrays you as a fraud.
@rockymissouri1 That doesn't even make any sense, what are you even trying to say? You are just "emoting" - there is no actual thinking or thought process going on there. Take a look at this website and learn something about Islam so that you won't continue making such silly statements: www.thereligionofpeace.com
@Timmy @dcCU and neither am i. u dont state ur religion but i presume christian since u make reference several times in comparison, again u must not know the history of christendom interfacing with other religions. maybe ur catholic? still doesnt fly...how many wars have the vatican and pope started funded? ur so confused it is sad u dont even know what ur saying. I AM NOT DEFENDING OR PROMOTING any religion only freedom of choices and speech. the strongest will survive, its the law of nature. I would not characterize myself as a liberal yet funny how u prejudice against me? did your religion teach you that? DOLT! WAKE UP!
@dcCU dcCU I am not the founder of a so-called religion that forces people to follow it and which idiots are allowing to spread in the West including America. I would not do that to a child, but Muhammad did. That you don't care about that is the problem here. That you would rather attack me is the problem. You are afraid to say anything bad about Islam because as a liberal you have been brainwashed to attack Christians and respect "the other."
@Timmy whatever drone! ur a slave and dont even know it! grinding yourself in the dirt! i pity you, how miserable your life must be. sorry dude
