Class Act

Visionbox, a local actors’ studio and commercial theater group, recently relocated to 910Arts in the Art District on Santa Fe, bringing an infusion of performing-arts energy to an already artsy area that’s starting to see an upshift in the theatrical realm. But, as Visionbox director Jennifer McCray Rincon (who first came to Denver to teach acting at the now-defunct National Theatre Conservatory) rightly observes, it takes money — lots of it — to build a really great program and company. And “we have very little money,” she adds with a smile. Luckily, Visionbox has some very good friends, including one-man performer Robert Dubac (of The Male Intellect: An Oxymoron? and other solo shows) and Hollywood actor Bill Pullman, both of whom will be in attendance at a fundraising performance of Dubac’s work-in-progress smART! tonight at Gallery910arts, 910 Santa Fe Drive.

“Robert’s working on new material, and this is a sneak preview,” Rincon says. “Along with the piece, there are three painters who will be painting during the routines, all of them in communication and improvisation related to his material. These will be three or four prominent Denver painters, and the paintings will later be auctioned off as part of the benefit. This will definitely be a benefit with higher-priced tickets,” she notes, “but people get their money’s worth. We’ll have Robert, a free smorgasbord of food, champagne and drinks, and Bill Pullman, too.”

The party gets rolling at 7 p.m.; purchase tickets, $100 for singles or $150 for a couple, at www.visionbox.org.
