Classic Style

In past years, when Denver designer Mona Lucero threw a fashion show in her LoHi boutique, she’d also take a philosophical look back over the changes in her own life. But this year is different. “It is more about new beginnings,” says Lucero, who is both celebrating the boutique’s tenth anniversary and preparing to close it at year’s end. The artist within the designer will be taking a leap after that, moving into a shared studio situation where she can concentrate more on the business of creating a store rather than on running one.

So tonight at her Tenth Anniversary Fashion Show, she will send professional models and interesting friends down the runway, all wearing a potpourri of her newest designs, mixed with a retrospective of past ideas, at Flying Platte Cat Studios, 1644 Platte Street, adjacent to the boutique.

Prior to the shows, Lucero will also host an Indy Holiday Handmade Gift Sale that’s a little different from the raft of holiday markets we’ve been seeing this season. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., she’ll showcase a sophisticated mixture of fine art, jewelry and other handmade wares from a unique roster of vendors ranging from Flying Platte resident Sophie Melich, who makes cheeky velcro-closed neckties for cats, to future studio mates and artists Jimmy Sellars and Lauri Lynnxe Murphy. And fans of Mona Lucero Design Boutique need not fret too much once it’s over: Lucero says that, while the details aren’t final, she hopes to host regular trunk shows and possibly even limited open-studio hours for customers to visit in her new space.

Catch a fashion show at 8 or 10 p.m.; admission is free. Catch a fashion show at 8 or 10 p.m.; admission is free. For information, visit Lucero’s Facebook event page.
