Ice, Ice Baby
Ice sculpture is a holiday art form with wide-ranging appeal, offering power tools and chisels for hands-on types, aesthetically pleasing forms for those with an artistic bent, and a transient, impermanent medium for die-hard romantics. So it’s no wonder that Crested Butte Mountain Resort has made a tradition of bringing in nationally recognized ice sculptors to work their magic decorating Mountaineer Square and other locations around the resort for Rock on Ice.

“The artists just go for it; there’s really no theme,” says resort spokeswoman Erica Reiter. “They always do one with a photo opportunity — a carved-out spot for a face — and they put lights in some of them so they’re lit up at night.”
If you head up to the resort through next Saturday, December 22, you might have the opportunity to see an artist at work, but Reiter notes that there have been some years when the sculptures lasted until March. “It really just depends on the year,” she says. “So hopefully it stays cold and snowy.”
