Doom with a View

With predictions of doom dancing in his head, Kevin Larson has created a synthetic version of the apocalypse in Civic Center Park, portraying doomsday in a three-level art installation, with asteroids on level one, Mayan warriors on level two, and a post-apocalyptic bunker in level three — all soundtracked by a variety of electronica DJs. “The end of the world is inevitable. The question is, when will it actually happen?” asks Larson, who is using that anxiety to fuel the drama of his multi-themed work.

“It will be a theatrical event with artists, aliens, fire performers, grinder shows,” he says of End of the World: Three Levels of Armageddon. “There will be electro in the asteroid floor to fit that techno theme, Top 40 mash-up on the Mayan floor for dancing, and dubstep in the bunker. Electronica has that modern-day vibe and culture of music; it is technology-based, which is one version of how the world may end.”

While Larson says his creation isn’t exactly a terror-inducing haunted house, it’s still made for those 21 and older, so hire a babysitter before heading down.
