The Denver Botanic Gardens improves on Blossoms of Light, at the Denver location — and its sister event, Trail of Lights, at the Chatfield DBG — a little bit each year, and this season is no exception. “On Fridays, folks can come in and get a drink,” says spokesman Will Jones, cutting right to the chase. “We’ll have ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Bar,’ and folks can have a little alcohol added to their warm beverage if they’re over 21.” There will also be choirs on select nights, and the shop and restaurant will be open so that walkers through the hundreds of thousands of lights can stop and have dinner first.

And there’s something arguably just as awesome at Chatfield: a synthetic ice-skating rink. It’s made of a recyclable polymer compound; bring $5 to rent skates, and you’re off! “It feels just like you’re skating on a frozen pond,” Jones says, “but if you fall down, you don’t get cold.”

Blossoms of Light and Trail of Lights both open tonight and run nightly from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. through January 1; admission ranges from $5 to $12 (free for kids age two and younger).
